Who we are and What we are all about...

ASPIRES was born in November 2000.   The "Magnificent Seven" (our original seven founders) had been part of the only existing board nationally for spouses, partners, and adults.  But the seven desired to explore the positive opportunities that exist for those with AS, and wished to form a path with hope and vision.

ASPIRES is a mixed international community of parents, partners, spouses, and adults with AS. We recognize the challenges our community faces as we live it every day.   By exploring different methodologies, possible medications, social coaching, and diverse strategies for building positive support systems in order to strengthen the family unit with shared experiences, guidance, and even a sense of humor, ASPIRES has evolved into a truly unique site.

We strongly believe that having a variety of members in this community gives us different perspectives of any given situation.   Each side can explore the viewpoints of others without feeling personally challenged. The missing piece of the puzzle of AS has generally been that the adults or children are not allowed to articulate how it feels to have AS, and to explain the reasons behind their actions.   Here that "piece" is allowed freedom of expression, and the resulting discussions are varied and illuminating.

We believe that many individuals feel isolated when they first learn of AS. It is through support groups, locally, nationally, and internationally, through message boards, and through sharing articles, books and other resources that websites such at ASPIRES can help others not feel alone or isolated.   Awareness brings understanding, tolerance, and respect for each other, and ASPIRES helps provide the key to many families.

We believe the AS culture needs to be understood by those who have AS in the family.  The world of education, social interaction, and careers will bring multiple challenges to the families experiencing AS.  Together, as individuals and as families we can make the journey together, supporting and encouraging each other, and together we will climb the mountain of AS and autism.

ASPIRES Mission Statement

To educate and support families with Asperger Syndrome through discussion, encouragement, sharing of resources and personal experiences.

The members of ASPIRES will strive together to find positive solutions for the many challenges our families face every day.

"We each have our own way of living in the world, together we are like a symphony.
Some are the melody, some are the rhythm, some are the harmony
It all blends together, we are like a symphony, and each part is crucial.
...Sondra Williams

We might not always agree; but TOGETHER we will make a difference.
